Pure SBR


There are many different variations of the Sequential Batch Reactor (SBR) process available on the market today. The SBR treatment plant offers numerous benefits over continuous flow systems and has been demonstrated as having both financial and operational advantage


The Plantwork Systems Pure SBR process has been developed and enhanced over a periodspanning more than 30 years. Originally developed in Finland, members of our process team have designed hundreds of systems of various different scales to meet a number of different wastewater challenges. The Pure SBR wastewater treatment plant has been used to treat municipal, commercial and industrial wastewater very successfully in various locations around Europe.


Suitable for all biologically treatable wastewaters – The Pure SBR technology has been used to treat effluents from food processing factories to caravan parks as well as municipal wastewater.


Grey or Black water recycling – The Pure SBR is ideal for use on sites where recycling of grey or black water is an important consideration due to its ability to produce very high quality effluent without requirement for significant additional tertiary treatment.


Application as ‘side stream’ technology – Where existing works are struggling to cope with increased hydraulic and contaminant loads, a Pure SBR reactor can be installed in parallel to the process stream.  A portion of the flow can be diverted to this reactor, treated to a good standard and then returned to the main process line.  This technique reduces the strain on both the secondary and tertiary treatment equipment on-site and can significantly extend the life of an STW.

small003Phased Developments – When being installed for use with a new or growing development, the reactors can be installed in stages as and when they are required to treat additional flow.  This makes it a very CAPEX competitive solution for developers looking to spread the cost of their development.


Treatment works likely to be subjected to contaminant and hydraulic shock loading – The Pure SBR technology has been designed and implemented successfully to treat flows with Flow to Full Treatments (FFTs) up to 6 times Dry Weather Flow (DWF).  Flows arrive at an equalisation tank before being distributed to the reactors.  If incoming influents are heavily contaminated they can be held in this tank without being allowed to enter the reactor spaces and damage the naturally balanced ecology.

Colder climates – Originally developed in Finland, Pure SBR technology has been built and operated in climates where temperatures drop as low as -25°C for prolonged periods in winter and then raise to 20°C+ in the summer months.


Small footprint – To meet suspended solids effluent standards of down to 10mg/l, no primary or tertiary clarifiers are required, translating in to significant space savings.


Low CAPEX and OPEX costs – In addition to saving space, the lack of requirement for primary or tertiary clarifiers reduces the capital build cost of a works and also helps to reduce energy usage. Odour Control – Pure SBR reactors are odour free, even in very hot summers at full loading. If odour is of key concern then the screening, grit removal and sludge handling elements of the process can be housed within an indoor structure to guarantee odour control.

Easy to install – The Pure SBR can be installed in a variety of different configurations dependent on the specific site requirements. For example, where aesthetics are an issue the system can be predominantly submerged and covered. Aesthetically appealing structures can be used to house equipment and the system could be surrounded by a reed bed or integrated with a SuDS scheme. This would both enhance the appeal of the site, and act as a final polishing aid.

Easy to maintain – A high level of automation is involved within the Pure SBR including failsafe’s and alarm systems. Wastewater treatment plants would typically consist of two or more reactors. When maintenance is required within a reactor then it can be drained down. The remaining reactors will then deal with the flows whilst the maintenance is carried out.

Easy to operate with minimal training – Operating the Pure SBR system requires very little training for wastewater treatment plant operators. The plant and technology involved is no different to that found in traditional Activated Sludge works.

Low total sludge production – An extended sewage sludge age leads to the breakdown of a greater amount of sludge than conventional AS processes. The Pure SBR therefore produces significantly less sludge than alternatives.

Low energy use – The Pure SBR averages an energy consumption rate of 0.6-1.2 kWh/kgBOD which is significantly lower than alternative technologies such as AS, IFAS, MBBR or MBR.
